BRUGES, Belgium—For a third season, New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has come to Belgium but this was its first performance in Bruges, the European capital of Europe in 2002. The venue, Het Concertgebouw, where Shen Yun performed is reputed to have one of the best acoustics in the world. The concert hall is entirely built on iron springs so as to avoid any external vibrations or sounds. The building is covered with 68,000 red terracotta tiles.
Choirmaster, musician and former teacher in musicology, Michel Croos, came to see Shen Yun in Bruges on Tuesday evening, March 9 and called it a “godsend.”
Because of his musical background and passion for concerts, he often goes to concerts and this time he was curious about how the Shen Yun Orchestra with the combination of Chinese and Western instruments would sound.
“It is the first time that I came, and I find it grandiose, very well refined, very pretty. But for me, the instruments and the orchestra are as importance as the dancers, because I am also a musician," he said.
Mr. Croos was deeply impressed by the Chinese instruments saying: “The erhu was first-rate, with just one pair of strings … It sounds exotic, of course. We don’t have that here these days. But in the middle ages, we probably also had monochords. So we also had an instrument with only one snare at that time."
"What attracted me is the Chinese music, and especially with the goal of classical Chinese music. I love it enormously.”
Mr. Croos thinks it is a sparkling show, he will definitely recommend it. "It is entertainment, and for me, it is to look at the orchestra."
