Chinese Painter: Shen Yun Awakens My Soul

TOKYO—Ms. Chi Yiyi, a famous painter residing in Japan, remembers how deeply she was touched by the Shen Yun Performing Arts show last year. Even after the curtain had fallen, she was still deeply immersed in the performance by Shen Yun.

Accompanied by her sister, Ms. Chi came to watch the third show in Tokyo, performed by the Shen Yun New York Performing Arts on the evening of March 6.

Ms. Chi said emotionally, “This is the second time that I came to see Shen Yun’s show. This time it awakened the sleeping soul inside me, giving me the feeling of a sudden rebirth. That ray of Buddha shined on my heart in the show, reviving my soul once more.”

She clearly expressed that the feeling of watching the show for the second time was quite different from the first time. She said, “What I saw the first time was ultimate beauty, but this time the show gave me the feeling that my soul, sleeping deeply in my heart, was awakened."

Ms. Chi experienced exactly what Shen Yun hopes audiences will, an experience of consummate beauty that touches the soul.

“The magnificent ray of Buddha is most impressive. It has an invisible power. In the program The Buddha's Teachings Spread Far and Wide near the end of the show, the torch of the Buddha made me feel that as it shines, it eliminates the ugly side of this world completely, and the original beauty of the world can be revealed. In fact, it tells us that human souls are innately beautiful, but people have forgotten about it. This is why I feel my soul was revived.”

Ms. Chi said, “Returning to one’s true self. ... returning to one’s true self. Shen Yun is truly wonderful! Really wonderful!

Shen Yun uses Chinese classical dance, an orchestra composed of both Western and Eastern instruments, in addition to world-class singers to bring its message to audiences in over 100 cities this year.

“My sister clapped her hands throughout the show. I guess her hands are swollen from clapping. The actors and actresses exquisite performance fully attested to their continuous practice and training. That’s why they were able to touch audience’s hearts.”

Chi’s elder sister used to be a stage designer in Taiwan. She saw Shen Yun’s advertisement in Taiwan before coming to Japan, but did not expect to attend the Shen Yun show in Japan.

Watching Chi’s excitement, the elder sister couldn’t refrain from saying, “It is so touching and exciting. Before I came to Japan, I saw a big advertisement in Taiwan. I will watch the show again when I return to Taiwan. Their body language and movements are simply superb, truly marvelous.”

The elder sister explained, “It is not just the body language, I feel the demonstration of the Buddha Fa is the greatest part. I can’t fully describe how deeply I was moved when I saw the Buddha Fa as illustrated in the show. Falun Gong is everywhere in Taiwan.  So, I can understand the meaning of “The gods are only a few feet above your head” as revealed in the program Astounding Conviction. The program is so touching that made me cry. My trip to Japan has been well worthwhile, truly wonderful.”

Chi’s elder sister attended some Chinese dancing shows overseas in the past. “I feel Shen Yun’s show is so different from others ... every program of today’s Shen Yun performance is abundant with meaning. I was so excited and so attentive to the show that I kept clapping. I kept on looking at the stage, hoping that the performers could see my appreciation. I raised my arms really high to praise them.”

In the end, she added, “I feel this show is not just for adults; children should see it too. When I return to Taiwan, I will buy some tickets and invite young kids to the show.”

Ms. Chi received an Honorable Medal of International Art and Culture in Japan and has won the Minister Award of Foreign Affairs. She has also been awarded the gold medal by the Art Critic Selection Committee of Spain's National Museum of Prado (Museo Nacional del Prado) and appointed the “Ema” Painter of the Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine, a world heritage of Japan. She is known for making charity contributions to the establish Taiwan’s Guide Dog School. Her artistic work is known for its sensibility and illusion.
