'The talent is just superlative' Says Attorney
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky—Shen Yun Performing Arts performed at The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, March 7 for one night only.
The company brought to Kentucky a traditional Chinese cultural show, with stories from ancient times to the present.
Dr. Dean Pierce, a dentist, his wife and Jim Smith, an attorney, had stepped out into the lobby during intermission and didn't mind at all to speak of their impressions of the show.
Dr. Pierce said, "It's very enjoyable, very entertaining. [I] really didn't know what to expect. We've enjoyed it very much."
Dr. Pierce's wife had seen the show's flyers and she thought it would be something interesting to see. "We bought the tickets and we've enjoyed it very much."
Mr. Smith particularly enjoyed Flowing Silk. According to the program, this is a scene where silken sleeves flow softly through the air, much like drifting ribbons in the breeze. A lighthearted melody complements young maiden's soft smiles and spins. Dances such as this with what Chinese call "water sleeves" are a favorite in classical Chinese dance. The Sleeves' patterns conjure an image of rippling water.
"I thought it was very interesting with the water hands, you know how they have the long sleeves and very flowing. I thought that was very intriguing. Very peaceful. Real tranquil," he said.
Mr. Smith specially spoke of the dance Nothing Can Block the Divine Path, in which a mother and daughter who perform Falun Dafa exercises in a park are discovered by police. The police carry out orders to arrest and break the will of anyone who follows this peaceful spiritual discipline. Like millions of other Falun Dafa adherents in real life, they are brutalized. The mother is dragged to a detention center where she pays the ultimate price for trying to protect her daughter.
"That was a particularly disturbing scene ... I thought it was very realistic. ... it was emotionally disturbing because you see what the people may have to go through. I think it's probably a realistic portrayal in a lot of ways and that's troubling, but I think it's important to bring those traits out."
He explained: "I am a trial attorney, I think there are various sides, and I think the director was very clear in his point of view on that. I think it was interesting to see that, and I had no idea what to expect, but I'm enjoying it an awful lot."
He continued, "I just love the colorful aspect of it, and the talent is just superlative. Obviously there is a lot of training and a lot of care and concern that goes into it. I thought the training was exquisite.
"I've never seen anything like this. It's very good, I'd see it again."
